Well there are lot of stupid sites on the internet, but i just read tech stuff from reliable sources like Techcrunch and if i need to read some tech product reviews i just go to cnet.com.

I reckon find some good sources of tech info, blogs, sites that review products etc and use Google Reader or iGoogle to subscribe - set your homepage to iGoogle or Google reader and check it every time you open the browser.
I could remember when i bought a product based on the review i saw a site and it turned that the product does not deliver what the review claims it deliver. Since then i have learnt my lessons to always perform due diligence before i place any order on the net.
to stay up to date, I like having a few alerts with good google keywords that come into my inbox daily / weekly.
that way my laste/greatest news is organized/filed by topic, all in a single go.
I think, keep following new tech just make our life become more complicated
